Court Disqualifies PDP Candidate, Oborevwori Sheriff 2022 Governorship Election
Sherrif Oborevwori, the Peoples Democratic Party’s nominee for governor of Delta State in 2023, was banned from running by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday. Justice Taiwo Taiwo’s opinion for the court held that Oborevwori lacked the legal capacity to take part in the election.
The decision was made in response to a lawsuit filed in court by Mr. Olorogun Edevbie, a party member who had been wronged. Among other things, the Plaintiff had argued that the Defendant had not been legitimately nominated by his party.
He testified before the court that during the state congress that selected Oborevwori as its candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial race, PDP violated both its constitution and the Electoral Guidelines.
In order to prevent the party from submitting Oborevwori’s name to INEC and the electoral authority from accepting or recognizing him as the party’s officially nominated candidate for the election, the plaintiff asked the court to impose restrictions.
The PDP and INEC were named as Defendants in the case as well. Justice Taiwo concluded that the lawsuit had validity in his ruling on Thursday.
More specifically, the plaintiff requested a court injunction prohibiting Oborevwori from representing himself or acting in any way as the PDP’s candidate for governor in the state. As a result, he granted Oborevwori’s requests for relief.
