Educational Background And Qualification

Shettima began his schooling at Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri between 1972 and 1978, before transferring to the Government Community Secondary School in Biu in 1978, where he completed his secondary school education and received his West African School Certificate Examinations (WAEC) in 1980.

In 1983, he was admitted to the University of Maiduguri for his first degree program, earning a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Agriculture Economics with a second-class upper division.

From 1989 to 1990, he worked for the Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank in Calabar as part of his National Youth Service (NYSC), after which he studied agricultural economics at the University of Ibadan from 1990 to 1991.

Shettima worked as a lecturer at the University of Maiduguri’s Department of Agricultural Economics from 1991 to 1993 after earning his master’s degree.

He later worked as an Agricultural Economist for the Commercial Bank of Africa in Ikeja, Lagos State (1993-1997). He worked as a Deputy Manager, then Manager, at the African International Bank Limited’s Kaduna Branch from 1997 to 2001, and then as Deputy Manager/Branch Head of the Zenith Bank’s Maiduguri Office from 2001 to 2005.

He was appointed Commissioner of the Borno State Ministry of Finance and Economic Development in the middle of 2007. Later, under his predecessor, Borno Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, he became a Commissioner in the Ministries of Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Education, Agriculture, and Health.

Engineer Modu Fannami Gubio was chosen as a governorship candidate in the ANPP primaries in January 2011. Gubio was assassinated by gunmen later that year, and Shettima was chosen in a second primary in February 2011, and went on to win the general election on April 26, 2011.

He entered the banking industry in 1993, working for the (now defunct) Commercial Bank of Africa Limited in Ikeja, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, as the head of the accounts unit.

Shettima worked in the company from 1993 to 1997. He joined the African International Bank Limited as a Deputy Manager in 1997 and advanced through the ranks to become a Manager in 2001. In 2001, he became the head of the Zenith Bank’s Maiduguri branch.

He ascended through the Zenith Bank ranks to Senior Manager/Branch Head, Assistant General Manager (AGM)/Zonal Head (North-East), and Deputy General Manager/Zonal Head (North-East) before leaving as a General Manager in 2007 to take up the position of Commissioner for Finance in Borno State.

Shettima worked as an Agricultural Economist for the Commercial Bank of Africa in Ikeja, Lagos State (1993-1997). He worked as a Commissioner in five ministries from 2007 to 2011. Engineer Modu Fannami Gubio was chosen as a governorship candidate in the ANPP primaries in January 2011. Gubio was assassinated by gunmen later that year, and Shettima was elected in a second primary in February 2011.

Shettima received 531,147 votes in the April 2011 elections, while Muhammed Goni of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) received 450,140 votes. He served as Commissioner of Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs in 2008, Education in 2009, Agriculture and Natural Resources in 2010, and finally the Ministry of Health, where he ran for Governor in 2011 and was inaugurated on May 29, 2011 under the platform of the now defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP.

He was unambiguously elected Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, an umbrella body of Governors in the 19 northern Nigerian states, in 2015. He was re-elected in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress, APC. He has so far been instrumental in bringing about significant changes in the activities of the forum, with an emphasis on strengthening northern cooperation and recovering the northern States’ ailing sectors.

He has effectively addressed issues emanating from the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno State, which he inherited in 2011. In 2013, his government formalized the Civilian JTF, a group of young volunteers, with the approval of the National Security Adviser and the Nigerian Army.

A Katsina politician named Ibrahim Masari was proposed by Tinubu as his running mate in mid-June to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission’s deadline (INEC).

All political parties must submit candidates’ names for the presidential and gubernatorial races, together with those of the vice president and deputy governor candidates.

According to The Guardian, Tinubu will replace Masari’s name as his potential running mate for the 2023 presidential election after withdrawing Masari’s name.
